President McClain's report from South Asia

02.01.2011

Dick McClain, president and CEO of The Mission Society, and Frank Decker, vice president of mission operations, recently traveled to a remote region of South Asia to explore a new field. This area of Asia has one of the largest concentrations of Muslims and less than two dozen cross-cultural workers serving among them.

They had an incredible experience and plan to send Mission Society missionaries to this region, which will be a new field of service for The Mission Society. Here, Dick recounts one morning in a house church.

“This morning, we attended a small gathering of believers in a house church. It was held in a Dalit's house (an untouchable). To say it was humble doesn't even come close to describing its simplicity. The meeting was in the front courtyard that had been roofed over. Some sat on the wooden bed that filled more than half of the total area. Others squatted on the ground around a small fire, because it was very cold.

“The pastor was a Hindu convert from a very high caste. He is a Rajput. Were it not for Jesus, he would have had nothing to do with the others there, but here he was in an untouchable's home. It's where his church meets!

“Two women shared their testimonies. Both were amazing stories of Jesus appearing to them in dreams. Both had experienced miraculous healings. One of the two had come to faith because of her discovering that He is the only true God who is willing and able to answer prayer.

“After a of couple songs, it was my turn to share. Jesus had very clearly led me earlier in the morning to share from Matthew 9. So I climbed up on the bed, sat down cross-legged, and dove in. I shared about God miraculously healing my Mom and my brother when she was pregnant with him in 1952, while she was serving as a cross-cultural witness. And then we talked our way through the healings, the resurrection, and the deliverance recorded that chapter.

“At the end of the chapter, it records Jesus' compassion for the needy multitudes, followed by his charge to pray that the Lord of the harvest would send out workers. The next chapter (10:1) begins with Jesus sending the disciples out two-by-two. They ended up being the answer to their own prayer! So we talked about Jesus' compassion for the needy multitudes in their city, and the fact that He was using them as His hands and feet to touch them. We were all crying. It was precious.

“God is leading us to come to this place, but not to bring Him here. Jesus is already here. We will simply join Him and these humble followers of His who will become our teachers.

“We in America preach and teach that the miracles of the Bible were true, though we don't really expect to see them ourselves. The Jesus followers we were with today never doubt that Jesus will heal and do miracles...and He does. And as a result, people believe.”
