The Mission Society has commissioned Elliott and Katherine Stotler of Fayetteville, Ga., as full-time missionaries to lead strategic ministries that relieve misery in one of South Africa's poorest provinces.

Deployed this month, the Stotlers will develop educational, agricultural and economic empowerment programs while building relationships with the people of South Africa's Eastern Cape.

"We are thrilled God has called Elliott and Katherine to South Africa," said Dick McClain, president and CEO of The Mission Society. "They are dedicated missionaries whose ministries will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the people of the Eastern Cape."

The Stotlers plan to support a preschool, further agricultural programs, lead job skills training and microenterprise efforts, and encourage local pastors. The couple is also interested in engaging in humanitarian work that involves care and hospice outreach for orphans and adults with HIV/AIDS and with youth development.

"We are eager to begin our ministry," Elliott Stotler said. "Katherine and I feel so blessed with this opportunity to share God's love with South Africans."

A native Texan who has lived in Atlanta more than 10 years, Elliott Stotler served as missions leader of Atlanta First United Methodist Church. There he managed the church's partnerships with local ministries that assist the urban poor, facilitated member involvement in serving others and guided mission education through small group training. He has a degree in economics from Davidson College and an MBA from the University of North Carolina.

The Stotlers have three children. Their son Cason has joined them in South Africa; Emily and Ryan will remain in the U.S. to attend college.
