Chinese Christians trained for cross-cultural service

Recently, one of our missionary couples serving in China stopped by our office. They are part of a network of discipleship groups that span the world’s most populous nation.

These groups are designed, following Jesus’ example, to disciple a small number of Chinese Christians, to pour into their lives, preparing them for ministries of multiplication. Currently, 10 students (ranging in age from 21-35) are being discipled by this missionary couple.

“They come to us,” said our missionaries, “because their goal and desire is to go out as missionaries.” The countries in which these Chinese students feel called to serve include Afghanistan, India, Kuwait, and Russia. Others feel called to serve within China itself, helping to reach university students or unreached minority populations.

One Monday morning, the students came to class after having just witnessed to a police officer on the bus! When our missionaries reminded them that the officer could have arrested them and put them in jail, their reply was simple: “But he needs to hear the gospel, too. Why would we not share with him?”

Even though these young believers are already passionate about evangelism, willing to sacrifice for the sake of the gospel, and thoroughly immersed in Bible, they sense their need for more discipleship and training. So these students dedicate a year to intensive discipleship, because they want to be more effective. “They want to know how to apply the scriptures to people’s lives,” our missionaries explain. “They want to learn discipleship methods. And they want to know how to share the gospel with people from cultures other than their own.”

Last year this missionary couple discipled eight students, who are now are training 80 other leaders. One of them is a house church pastor whose congregation is made up of 12 homeless believers in one of China’s cities. Now these homeless men have begun to ask their pastor, “Can you train us so that we can share Jesus with other homeless men?”

Thank you for your partnership with The Mission Society. God is using you to equip these young people to proclaim Jesus to the nations.
